Ways to Save Money When Planning Your Dream Wedding Day

By Franc — February 17, 2014

Every couple wants to have the wedding of their dreams; however, many people feel like their budgets just won’t allow them to have the wedding that they really want.

There is good news.  You don’t have to choose between a dream wedding and a budget wedding.

There are lots of ways that you can save money when planning your dream wedding day.  Check out some of these ideas.

Schedule your wedding for off-peak season.

Most weddings are held in the Spring, particularly May and June.  Because of the laws of supply and demand, everything wedding-related will cost more during those times.

On top of the influx of weddings in the spring, there are many other events, like Debutante Balls and graduations, that are competing for venues, limos, and floral services.  If you schedule your wedding for a non-peak time, like October or February, you can save alot of money.

You are more likely to get your first choice of venues and vendors, and many services that you need will cost less than it would in the spring.  If you are willing to be a bit flexible with your date, you can save a significant amount of money by holding your wedding during an off-peak time.

Reduce the guest list.

A huge wedding may seem lavish and exciting now, but it can also mean more headaches.  You’ll save money on food, drinks, centrepieces, and more.  You don’t really have to invite that second cousin or the co-worker who you don’t really like, anyway.

The odds are that in ten years’ time, when you look at your wedding album, you will realize that you haven’t seen many of the people in the photos for years.

Don’t have your wedding on a Saturday

Just like scheduling your wedding off-season, you can save money by holding your wedding on any day other than Saturday.  A Friday evening or Sunday can work just as well for your schedule and be a much less costly alternative to a Saturday.

Choose flowers that are in season, and choose less expensive varieties.

Orchids are beautiful, but quite costly.  Stick with just one or two types of in-season flowers.  If there is a certain type of costly flower that you have to have, try using minimal stems of that flower and filling in with greenery and other non-floral décor, such as lanterns and candles.

Order a small cake for your cake cutting ceremony, and have a larger sheet cake on hand in the kitchen to serve the guests.  An elaborate cake can be quite pricey.

A small decorative cake will serve your purposes for the cake cutting ceremony.  A simple sheet cake to serve guests will be much less costly and often taste better than a fancy tiered cake.

Send save-the-date cards by email rather than traditional paper notices.

The actual wedding invitations should still be sent by post, but it is perfectly acceptable to email your save-the-dates.  This can save you a substantial sum of money in the form of both the stationery and the postage associated with sending save-the-date cards.
