TOP TIPS FOR THE GROOM

Congratulations! This is an exciting time.

Most grooms are so excited to be engaged and just getting used to the word my fiancée! When they are usually taken by surprise that the moment you announce your engagement, you seem to be questioned when? when? are you getting married!! I know I was. We had decided to marry about six months later that year. If you wish for a long or short engagement, it really is up to you both.

My top tips for the groom.

This has the potential to be the best party you will ever attend. So please enjoy working on it with your partner. I do love detail but please make sure you don’t fall into the trap of letting the detail get in the way of you both enjoying every moment of your day. So many couples have never been married before and are told you must do this or you must do that!!

I have been organising beautiful weddings all over the world for over 20 years and the truth is, you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to!!

The flow of the day is really the most important part of a wedding. Most grooms ask a best friend or brother to be their best man, this is something I would also do. Even if this guy is the worst person to give a speech, he is your best friend.

Sorry but this one I have to shout from the rooftops as speeches can really kill a wedding when they go onto long. My trick is to give everybody ten mins each. If they go over the ten mins they will hear a warning bell or horn will be blown and the microphone will be faded out or you will here

TELL YOUR BEST MAN NOT TO HAVE A SPEECH MORE THAN TEN MINS LONG! NOT TO WORRY! A FEW WORDS FROM THE HEART IS ALL HE NEEDS!  NOT TO TRY AND TELL JOKES, IF HE WANTS TO, NO MORE THAN ONE! THE SPEECHES ARE BEST BEFORE DINNER SO THAT HE CAN RELAX, EAT DINNER AND DRINK STRAIGHT AFTER HE HAS SPOKEN!!

Most of us men are {last min . com} when it comes to most things. My advice would be start looking at suits as soon as you can with an honest friend, who has the most fashion sense. My top tip is go to a recommended store that will let you try on many different styles and leave the decision up to you. A lot of my friends leave this task until a few weeks before the wedding, which means they end up wearing something they really didn’t want to wear on their wedding Day.

Trust me, you will want to feel fantastic on your wedding day and clothes can really change the way you feel. Remember you have a voice!

The best weddings are weddings that reflect you and your partners taste and style etc. If you are into food , the outdoors, surfing, rugby, golf, ballet, rock music, whatever it is,  your family and friends know you for this. Make this connection part of your wedding Day. Make it a fun relaxed day by introducing the other family into some of your traditions. If your family love going to a famous local bar at home, name the bar at your wedding this name and serve a local drink. If your family are from west cork or south africa serve a local dish late at night or as part of the meal. These are the things that connect people at your wedding.

Make sure your top table is in the middle of your wedding. This is always a contentious issue where traditionally the family sat on a table at the top of a room looking at all their guests. I have organised so many weddings all over the world, like I said and this is still my top tip!! Parents often disagree with me on this point. Franc, you can not have your back to someone when you speak! My reply is you don’t really, as you are looking around at all your family around you and they are all looking at you in the centre of the room. Eating dinner on one side of a table is a terrible idea to me, if it was such a great idea why are we not always requesting restaurants for tables where six or eight best friends can sit on just one side of a table!! I will tell you why, because is is not fun, comfortable or intimate. It is quite the opposite actually.

The wedding day goes so fast and a lot of couples surveyed by a wedding portal claimed to have enjoyed the day after the wedding as more enjoyable. They were more relaxed and had more time with their friends. Please don’t let this happen to you. Like I said THIS IS YOUR WEDDING AND YOU SHOULD BE IN CONTROL. Many couples are led by photographers, videographers , musicians and other vendors as to when and what they should be doing on their wedding day. This is a big mistake, you should be in control of your day. You should be telling the vendors what you would like.

My top tip is to take 15 minutes together without anyone but your partner on your big day, whether for a smooch, a cuddle or a ……
